ABOUT MATH on the MOUND

OUR MISSION

At Math on the Mound, we believe that the game of baseball is more than just a sport -it’s a living classroom. From the perfect angle of a pitch to the arc of a homerun, math and physics are woven into every play. Our mission is to harness the excitement of the game to ignite a love of STEM in young learners, especially those who may not always have access to these opportunities.

Founded and led by students, Math on the Mound blends sports with science in a way that’s hands-on, interactive, and fun. Our programs are designed for underserved youth, introducing concepts like geometry, statistics, and physics through the thrill of baseball. Whether it’s calculating batting averages, measuring distances around the diamond, or exploring the physics of pitching, kids get to see math come alive on the field. But our vision goes beyond equations. Math on the Mound is about building confidence, sparking curiosity, and showing students that math and science aren’t just subjects in a classroom - they are powerful tools that shape the world.

Because when a child realizes they already hold the skills of a scientist, an engineer, or a leader every time they step onto the field, the possibilities stretch far beyond the ballpark.

OUR FOUNDER

Math on the Mound was founded by Jack Whitney-Epstein, a lifelong baseball fan and gifted math student who wanted to make STEM exciting and accessible for all kids. The program brings math and physics to life through the game of baseball, inspiring young learners, especially those from underserved communities, to see themselves as future scientists, engineers, and leaders.
